Few months ago, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) published its second edition of the “Annual Overview of Marine Casualties and Incidents” for the period 2011-2014.
This 80-page document consists in a high-level analysis of accidents, as reported by EU Member States to a platform dedicated to Casualty Information (EMCIP).
Easy to read, thanks to numerous info-graphics, figures and pictures, it contains factual data on marine casualties. Marine accidents are categorized and detailed by types of ships, locations, contributing factors, consequences.
As it provides facts only, readers can form their personal opinion and draw their own conclusions from the detailed review.
Two “cherry-picked” figures, as food for thought…
- 178 ships were lost from 2011 to 2014, which means an average of 4 ships lost per month. 52% of those are fishing vessels.
- 67% of 908 accidental events analysed were attributed to human erroneous action
