As 2021 begins… my 5 takes on 2020:
– Seafarers are the Forgotten People of this crisis, feeling let down by most – “some at sea for more than 17 CONSECUTIVE MONTHS” – see ILO https://www.ilo.org/wcmsp5/groups/public/—ed_norm/—relconf/documents/meetingdocument/wcms_760649.pdf
– Big international organisations can work “virtually”, no need for 1000 people travelling to London on a regular basis. The IMO, UN agencies and large industry Groups all moved to virtual meetings. A transition which would have taken over 10 years, achieved in few weeks.
– Shipping and maritime industry will simply carry on, even if the regulatory machine is brought to an halt.
– Consumers behaviour is KEY and must change. The close loop or short circuit is the only way forward, but still looks like wishful thinking for many.
– Private life of office workers is more visible and that’s ok, kids, pets, etc… We are all in the same boat now!
